The Android fever is in the air and Google’s open Mobile OS is making waves in the industry with the handsets by the major manufacturers.  No wonder there are so many announcements by the mobile makers about launching their new Android phones in the forthcoming Mobile World Congress. Joining the league is a Chinese vendor Huawei, who recently announced its plans to bring a number of Android-based devices, to MWC.

Huawei  is already well acquainted with the Android platform, as it had launched the U8220 or T-Mobile Pulse as the cheapest Android Smartphone. But now the Android based home-use Internet devices will also take the MWC stage along with the Smartphone ranges. The details on the devices remain under the cover.

The Huawei brand has not yet established itself well in the UK and regards its Android as a strategic move to enhance its performance in the Western mobile market. Apart from this, it is also expected to perform demonstrations of its LTE (long term evolution) mobile broadband networks at MWC 2010,

In another announcement, by the Opera Software today, Huawei will preinstall Opera Mobile 10 on a range of mobile handsets. “By selecting Opera Mobile 10, Huawei is now able to implement the same user experience across its range of handsets, no matter the platform, ensuring high quality Web surfing for all customers,” Opera Software says.

iPhone Apps Not to Help Mobile Marketers

February 6th, 2010 by Manoj Jasra No comments »

Apple sent out a message to all the iPhone apps developers through its Developer Connection blog. To protect the user experience of its consumers, Apple has announced that it would return the app from the app store if it uses location based information to helps mobile marketers for target marketing. Though it encourages developers to use the core location framework but it should only be used for information such as local whether, finding a restaurant or locating an ATM.

Source: iPhone Buzz

If you build your application with features based on a user’s location, make sure these features provide beneficial information. If your app uses location-based information primarily to enable mobile advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on a user’s location, your app will be returned to you by the App Store Review Team for modification before it can be posted to the App Store.

Mobile advertising has been growing well and mobile advertising industry is said to grow at a very fast rate this year. This restriction from Apple could be a huge blow to the mobile advertisers as Apple constitutes a large section of mobiles owned in US.

Symbian Finally Opens its Doors for the Developers

February 4th, 2010 by Manoj Jasra No comments »

symbian

The open source Android finally made Symbian wrap off the cover from its codes and get into the Mobile OS war fully armed as the Symbian Foundation announced the much-awaited decision of making its code open source.

The move that had actually been taken in 2008 has finally reached its final destination and Symbian is now open for the developers to experiment. Symbian3, the new version of the OS, is now free and 100% open to all.  More than 330 million phones around the globe use Symbian but because of the new OSs launching in the market and falling market share of the Nokia handsets , Symbian had been losing its grounds in the industry.

“This is the largest open source migration effort ever,” Lee Williams executive director of the Symbian Foundation  told BBC News. “It will increase rate of evolution and increase the rate of innovation of the platform.”

“The dominant operating system provider out there is Symbian,” says Lee Williams , “and now we are offering developers the ability to do so much more.”

At present the Nokia primarily controls the development of Symbion but the Symbian foundation is now in plans to reduce Nokia’s input to “no more than 50%” by 2011.

The move will no doubt boost up the use of Symbian OS and it will yet again emerge as a potential opponent against the other mobile OSs.  2010 will be a very interesting and exciting year for mobile enthusiasts.

Ovi Orion from Recombu: Gaming Mobile for Nokia

February 4th, 2010 by Manoj Jasra No comments »

Games haven’t yet made it really big on mobile phone. Even though smart phones available today offer amazing features, the gaming experience still has a long way to go compared to what game consoles offer. Even though Nokia attempted at a gaming phone range N-Gage, Nokia couldn’t continue with the device.

Recombu has come up with the concept called Ovi Orion which is an extension of the N-Gage range. The concept of this phone is meant for serious gamers.

Our Ovi Orion concept is an evolution of N-Gage handsets, it is a phone/platform offering with a heavy slant on gaming. In other words, if the iPhone is Wii, then Ovi Orion would be Xbox and offer Xbox Live style features. A serious gaming phone for serious gamers. Watch our video below to see the Orion in action and click on the next page for close-up pictures and specs.

Machismo – First Ever Mobile to Light Cigarette

February 4th, 2010 by Manoj Jasra No comments »

Soon you will hear smokers say “Do you have mobile?” instead of the usual “Do you have a light?” as the lighter has made its way into the cellular phone. A new mobile called Machismo from China has is a boon for all the smokers. The “world’s hottest cigarette lighter mobile phone” as they call themselves is a triband with dual-SIM slots and has a 2.5 inch touchscreen.

The problem with modern life is you have to carry around too many things in your pockets. Wallet, keys, iPod, cellphone, and if you’re a smoker – a cigarette lighter too. Well here’s the perfect solution - The Machismo. Instead of carrying a phone AND a lighter, just turn this amazing phone around, slide open the safety latch, and the underlying heating element heats up in under 2 seconds. Place your cigarette on the glowing element and puff. Your cigarette is lit and you can enjoy your smoke. Super huh? Yes, Machismo!

Apart from the lighter, the phone comes loaded all major features such as 2GB TF MicroSD Card, 1.3 MP digital camera, video camcorder, a mp3 music player, dual SIM slots, an mp4 video player, PDA tools.

That certainly a HOT phone which can put other phones on fire!

Alcatel’s Slider Android to be a Killer Lower End Android phone

February 2nd, 2010 by Manoj Jasra No comments »

DSC_0125-440x292

If I am to mention about a mobile OS slowly taking onto the handsets of the major manufacturers, Android would be one word to echo in chorus. As the OS comes to blows with the others in the market, and as it may be seen assimilating a positive response on the web especially coz of its open nature, how much do we envy the owners of the expensive android handsets?  Quite a much. But lets give our jealousy some rest as a killer android phone for the lower end has just made its way to the mobile sphere.

Alcatel has just made a cool combination of Android and Palm pre in a single handset for the customers. With not so amazing but notable specifications under its hood, the phone carries 600Mhz CPU, 802.11 b/g, EDGE, 3G, GPS, Magnetometer (Compass), 2 megapixel camera, and an accelerometer. What is rather interesting is that the phone may be expected to roll out in a price lesser than the HTC Tattoo making it affordable to fit in many pockets. While that is all we know about the slider as of now, but you may take a closer look at the phone in the video down here by  Frandroid.

February 1st, 2010 by Manoj Jasra No comments »

nokia-n-series-mobile-phone-family

The smartphone market had been heating up with the latest high tech and most sophisticated technology and there were many players fighting to mark a niche with their innovation. But as Apple and RIM were seen taking a lead in the industry, Nokia was loosing onto its glorious market records. But the Finnish company is back in the race as it reports of 132 percent increase in operating profit year-on-year and a positive sign in its growth statistics.

Nokia’s revenues from smartphones increased 26% from the previous quarter to 3.9 billion euros and the major credit goes to the sales of high-end smartphones, the N-series and E-series,  that grew from 8.9 million to 10.7 million between the third and fourth quarters of 2009.

“We grew our market share in smartphones in the fourth quarter, driven by the successful launch of new touch and Qwerty models,” said Nokia’s chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo.

“Our performance in smartphones, combined with continuing success in the emerging markets, helped us increase sales in our devices & services unit, both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year.”

Nokia is well determined to win its shares back from its competitors and Apple takes the top spot in the list.

“Apple continues to be a great competitor, no doubt about that,” Mr. Kallasvuo said. “But we have our assets as well. Our strategy is in democratizing the smartphone in a massive way.”

Nokia reported a net profits of 882m euros for the last three months of 2009, a 53% increase on the 576m euros recorded a year earlier. However, Sony Ericsson and Motorola continued to struggle, selling 14.6 million and 12 million phones, respectively.
