According to the latest report by Gartner, the sales of mobile devices will witness a flat growth rate globally by the end of year 2009. Earlier in September, the research firm had forecast that the mobile sales would decline by 3.7%. The more than expected sales from Western Europe and increasing sales from grey market in the third quarter are cited as reason for the revised 0.67% compared to last year sales.

Eastern Europe, Japan, Latin america, Middle East and Africa had a drop in sales compared to last year and the sales were balanced globally by a good performance from Asia Pacific and Western Europe.
Ms Milanesi, research director at Gartner was quoted as
“Despite a projected return to growth in 2010, the times of 20 per cent growth are certainly over as mature markets are saturated and most growth will come from emerging markets.”
“Pressure will remain for manufacturers to sustain and grow margins as ASP continues to decline. Software, services and content will be much bigger drivers than hardware, pushing traditional mobile phone vendors to reinvent themselves to remain at the top of their game.”
