The Android platform marked the headlines of every site or computer magazine, with interminable   discussions as to whether it would beat the already existing market leaders like Apple, Symbion etc. or fade away in the glitter and dominance of these old players. The hype had still not caved in and there comes another fighter , Samsung’s new Smartphone platform BADA, ready to battle the OS war.

Bada, which means ocean in Korean,is also focusing over  cloud-data management, with  back-end bada servers, a range of content management systems and easy-to-activate device synchronization.  Bada promises to make “context-aware” apps possible through accelerometers, proximity and activity sensors, and weather information, etc.

Hosoo Lee, executive vice president and head of the Media Solution Center at Samsung Electronics said: “In providing Samsung Bada, I  believe that Samsung will become a true leader in the mobile industry, offering a wider range of smartphone choices for consumers. At the same time, Samsung bada presents a powerful opportunity for developers to get their applications onto an unprecedented number of Samsung devices across the world.”

Bada promises its users to be open and configurable thus enabling developers to take full advantage of mobile device capabilities to create compelling applications with ease. Samsung on its site has announced a series of developer days to take place across the world during 2010. The events will feature insights from current bada development partners including Twitter, Blockbuster and many more. Also to encourage everyone to make the most of the opportunity, Samsung has launched the bada Developer Challenge. This consists of a $27 million prize fund with $300k for first prize winner for applications that make the best use of the platform. Hosoo Lee, said that  the platform will enable developers “to get their applications onto an unprecedented number of Samsung devices across the world”.

Samsung and its local rival LG Electronics, have been jostling hard to make a mark in the fast growing smartphone market. Samsung has made a clever move by stepping in with its Bada. How capable the new platform is and how well it succeeds in holding on to its claims lets leave this judging for the near-term. But yes as smartphone prices fall and Nokia and Google push their operating systems to cheaper phones, Samsung must tighten its boots to make a difference from the rest.
